- Context
- This photo depicts the area that would be impacted by a proposed coal mining project at Hat Creek. B.C. Hydro proposed that these coal mines be used to fuel generators for a thermal power station, known as the "Hat Creek Project". The proposed site was close to Bonaparte Reserve, Cornwall, Pavilion, Deadman’s Creek, Fountain and Bridge River Reserves. Concerns arose regarding the environmental impacts and the imposition of inherent Aboriginal water rights. BC Hydro bought up many surrounding ranching operations in anticipation of the project, forcing half of the people on the Bonaparte Band List out of their homes to look for other employment.
