- Item is a photograph of Colstrip's coal mine in Montana (U.S.A.). The photo is a snapshot of the mining operations showing two tall stacks. There is smoke coming from one of the stacks as well from other structures that are part of the operation. In the foreground of the image there is a road and some grass land as well as a small hill with trees. Colstrip's main industry is a strip-mine and coal-fired electricity generating plant that is located about thirty miles south of the Yellowstone River.

- This photograph was taken on a trip to the United States to gather information about mining as part of public education efforts related to a film being produced by the Hat Creek Committee and the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs. The film, entitled "Hat Creek", documents concerns about B.C. Hydro's proposed plan for a coal mine and power plant. Since this project also involved researching and interviewing people who had already been affected by coal mining in other places, the filming of this project took UBCIC staff to Colstrip, Montana.
