This photograph was taken on a trip to the United States to gather information about mining as part of public education efforts related to a film being produced by the Hat Creek Committee and the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs. The film, entitled "Hat Creek", documents concerns about B.C. Hydro's proposed plan for a coal mine and power plant in Hat Creek, British Columbia. Since this project also involved researching and interviewing people who had already been affected by coal mining in other places, the filming of this project took UBCIC staff to Colstrip, Montana.
