In 1979, the residents of the Oweekeno Reserve were informed by the provincial government that their school would have to be closed down because only five students were enrolled. The Oweekeno people felt that closing the school would force them to find formal schooling elsewhere and this would ultimately destroy the community. The Oweekeno people presented a brief, which took four months to prepare, to government representatives on March 6, 1979 in an effort to save their school and their community. Their efforts were successful and in June of that same year they were informed that the school would remain open.
