In spring 1978, an informational two-day Treaty 8 workshop was coordinated by Union of BC Indian Chiefs at request of local First Nation communities. UBCIC resource people Fieldworker Mary Lou Andrew, Audio-Visual Technician Steven Basil, and Lawyer Louise Mandell were in attendance. Treaty 8 is one of eleven Numbered Treaties signed between First Nations and the Crown between 1871 and 1921. The agreement was signed by representatives of the Crown and thirty-nine northern First Nation communities, spanning approximately 840,000 kilometres on June 21, 1899. It was the last treaty signed in British Columbia prior to the Nisga’a Final Agreement.
